U.S. On Verge of World Group Return

Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson played first-strike tennis to put the United States one win from a World Group return.

The American pair defeated Farrukh Dustov and Denis Istomin, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, giving the United States a 2-1 lead over host Uzbekistan in the Davis Cup World Group Playoff in Tashkent.

Jack Sock can clinch an American World Group return in tomorrow's reverse singles against Uzbekistan No. 1 Istomin. If Istomin wins to level the tie, Johnson would play Dustov in the final match.

Querrey and Johnson did not drop serve in the match denying all five break points they faced. It was just the second time in the last 32 matches that neither Bob nor Mike Bryan was one of the American doubles players.

“I thought we played really well,” Querrey told Davis Cup.com. “We are a confident doubles team coming in and I thought we did everything that we do well, we did. I served well, Stevie cleaned up stuff at the net. I was hitting forehands. He was hitting forehands. It was a solid win and we are happy to get a point for the team.”
