Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem collaborated on a classic five-set US Open quarterfinal for the ages.

Thiem said his 0-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5) loss will linger forever.

"Yeah, it's going to be stuck in my mind forever," Thiem said. "Forever I'm going to remember this match, for sure."

"But, I mean, it's cruel sometimes tennis, you know, because I think this match didn't really deserve a loser. But there has to be one. And I would say if we skip the first set, was really open match from the beginning to the end. Yeah, the way it ended up in the fifth set tiebreaker, there it's 50/50. He made one more point than me."

The ninth-seeded Austrian actually won five more points than Nadal in their first-ever hard-court encounter that left fans buzzed and breathless.

It marked only the fourth time Nadal was force-fed a bagel in a Grand Slam and the first time the world No. 1 rallied to win a major match after enduring a shutout set.

In the end, both men received a rousing ovation from appreciative fans.

As the pair engaged in an emotional embrace, Nadal told Thiem he was "sorry" there had to be a loser on a night when the sport itself was a big winner.

Asked about Nadal's comment in his post-match press conference, Thiem showed he had not lost his sense of humor despite a grueling defeat.

"Well, I don't think he's really sorry," Thiem said with a smile.
