Andy Murray’s best singles performance of the season ended in defeat as Alex de Minaur outlasted the former World No.1 to reach the Zhuhai quarter-finals, 4-6 6-2 6-4 in two hours an 42 minutes on Thursday at the Huajin Securities Zhuhai Championships.

It was an intense battle that featured some brutal rallies, with de Minaur rallying from a set down and eventually weathering the best that Murray could offer before breaking critically for 5-4 in the third set.

After the match Murray admitted that getting used to the demands of top-level ATP singles competition has proven difficult for him this fall. He says he feels he is playing Top-60 or Top-70 level tennis and needs more time to recover after victories.

The Aussie, who improves to 25-15 on the season, stopped Murray from winning back-to-back tour-level singles matches for the first time in a year.

De Minaur advances to face Borna Coric in the quarterfinals. The last eight shape up as follows in Zhuhai.
