Karolina Pliskova: I am not a Robot

Karolina Pliskova
is known for being an ice queen on court. Stoic, brooding, and occasionally willing to axe-chop an umpire chair (
you had to be there
).
Well, the Czech can be quite combative (is axe-choppy a word?) in press as well. On Wednesday, after a tough 6-1 7-6(2) loss to Caroline Garcia on Day 3, the Czech was in no mood to hear from reporters how badly she played.
“I'm not a robot, so I don't have to play every day amazing,” was one of her best one-liners.
There were others.
And really, who can blame Pliskova for being in a bad mood? Put yourself in her shoes. Imagine walking into a press conference and dealing with questions about what went wrong from strangers on Zoom. What if you had a bad day at your job and had to log in to Zoom for ten minutes to answer questions about why you got a parking ticket or missed a spot shaving?
Of course, reporters have jobs to do, and as one of them, I get it. But that didn’t stop me from enjoying Pliskova’s antagonistic responses to the questions she faced today.
Clearly, as she puts it, she is not a robot.
“I don't know if you understand tennis well enough, but I had one chance in the second set, which was on her serve. So it's not like I was 5-2 up or serving for the match,” she said. “That's quite different, I would say. But anyway, I think I didn't play that bad. Maybe you saw different match. I thought [Garcia] played great tennis in the first set. She was just playing super aggressive, going for her shots.” What is Pliskova’s takeaway from coming to the States to play during the pandemic?
“I had tough three matches I think,” she said. “Definitely I could play better. I didn't play matches for a while, so I think maybe it can take some time to get back in the tournament rhythm. Hopefully this can happen on clay. “Let's see. I mean, we just started. I think there is no reason to panic really.”
