Andy Murray, Vienna 2014

Andy Murray came up with one of his biggest wins of 2014 when it mattered most, elevating the Scot to hero status for the week.

Another week is in the books, and a fresh batch of heroes—and zeros—to go with it. Without any further ado, let's get to the crowning…

The Trophies

Andy Murray

Andy Murray hasn’t had a horrible season, but it most certainly has been nothing like the 2013 that saw him become the first British man to win Wimbledon in 77 years. But credit to Murray for battling all the way to the finish line. He took a wild card into Vienna and proceeded to insert himself into the 8th spot in the Race to London by taking down David Ferrer by winning the final four games of the final.

Murray seems to have needed the whole year to get his body and mind to work as one, but now that he’s grooving, is he setting himself up to make a run for the London title?

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova

The Russian took the Kremlin Cup title to become only the fourth Russian woman in the history of the event to win it, rising to a ranking of 25 in the world in the process.

Tomas Berdych

Berdych won his second Stockholm title, and 10th of his career, by taking down defending champion Grigor Dimitrov in the final. It was a very nice response from the Czech. He needed points to stay in good stead in the Race to London, and he also needed to prove that not being able to land Ivan Lendl as his coach wasn’t going to cause him to go into a tailspin. Mission accomplished.

Annika Beck

Annika Beck became the tour’s 14th maiden title winner by cashing in for the Luxembourg title. The 20-year-old rises to 54 in the rankings and looks destined to go higher, perhaps much higher, in 2015.

Marin Cilic

Cilic earned his first post-US Open title by crashing the Kremlin in style. The tall, cool Croat becomes the first man from his country to win in Moscow since 1996 and qualifies for London for the first time in one fell swoop.

The Travesties

Shamil Tarpischev

The head of the Russian Tennis Federation created quite a stir when he went on national TV and called the Williams sisters the “Williams brothers,” thinking he’d get away with it because the show’s host was leading the way. Turns out the show’s host was leading him into a controversy. After being fined $25K and inciting players and pundits world wide, Tarpischev finally issued a medium-hearted letter of apology to the WTA. Bad news for Tarp but great news for anybody who was wondering if the WTA was cohesive enough to rally together and stand up for one another. After Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Martina Navratilova, Stacey Allaster and countless others came together to take a stand against Tarpishchev’s demeaning, ignorant remarks, we got our answer….

Saying Good-Bye

Tennis lost an incredible talent when Nikolay Davyenko elected to hang ‘em up last week in Moscow. The dimutive in stature yet big-hearted Russian was a joy to watch throughout his career. He climbed all the way to No. 3 in the rankings, won 21 titles and caused a lot of jaws to drop with fierce rallies like these:

Quote of the Week:

Maria Sharapova, watching Serena Williams’ back:

"I think they were very disrespectful and uncalled for, and I'm glad that many people have stood up, including the WTA. It was very inappropriate, especially in his position and all the responsibilities that he has not just in sport, but being part of the Olympic committee. It was just really irresponsible on his side."
