Ana Ivanovic finished her season on a positive note, taking down Simona Halep at the WTA Finals in Singapore, 7-6(7), 3-6, 6-3, but the effort left her short of qualification for the semifinals.

Ivanovic went into the match knowing she’d have to win in straight sets to reach the semis, and after an inspiring comeback from 5-2 down to take the first set in a tiebreaker, she seemed to be on the precipice of doing just that, but Halep rallied to take the middle set, thus ending Ivanovic’s hopes in Singapore.

Though Ivanovic was out mathematically—and Serena Williams in—the Serb, who returned to the WTA’s top ten for the first time in five years this season as well as leading the tour in victories with 57, fought valiantly to score the three-set victory.

It wasn’t just a moral victory for Ivanovic, as it does mean that she could end the season in the top five.

As for Halep, who notched the win of her career earlier in the week when she took down Serena Williams, 6-0, 6-2, she’ll have to prepare for a semifinal matchup with Agnieszka Radwanska.

Radwanska passed through to the semifinals earlier in the day despite losing to Maria Sharapova in three sets. The Pole becomes just the fourth player since 2003 to advance to the semifinals with a 1-2 record in round-robin play. Of those three, only one (Venus Williams, 2009) has reached the final and none have won the title.

Saturday’s semifinals shape up as follows:

Caroline Wozniacki vs.Serena Williams

Simona Halep vs. Agnieszka Radwanska
