Citing a need to take a break, it looks like World No. 1 Novak Djokovic will not play the upcoming Madrid Open.

ATP: Nishikori Repeats as Barcelona Champion

Per Spain's Marca, Djokovic opted not to play at the upcoming ATP Masters 1000 event due to his recent success having won titles in Indian Wells, Miami, and just a few weeks ago in Monte Carlo. Djokovic's decision to take an extra week off is considered by many to give him more time and rest as he prepares for next month's French Open.

Djokovic, who did not play Madrid last year due to a wrist injury, has no points to defend as well. The Serbian star also enjoys a sizable lead in the ATP Tour points race over Roger Federer, Andy Murray, and Rafael Nadal.

Because Djokovic meets ATP rules for years of service, he won't be penalized for skipping the event. Federer will now become the Madrid event's top seed.

Main draw play at the Madrid Open will start on May 3rd.
