“I think I played well,” Nadal said after the match. “I played with not many mistakes, winning a good percentage of points with my serve.”

Nadal broke early in both sets, only dropped one first-serve point, and saved the only break point he faced, but the three-time Indian Wells champion was more thrilled about his movement than anything else.

“One very important thing for me are the movements, and I think I moved myself a little bit quicker tonight than what I was doing one month ago,” he said. “So in general, I was able to defend some points well, to have some good passing shots, have some winners, some good shots down the line with my forehand. That always gives me a lot of confidence. So I have to be happy with the way I played tonight.”

Nadal will square off against American Donald Young in the third round on Tuesday at Indian Wells.

“He's playing very well,” Nadal said. “Winning a lot of matches. Could be a very tough opponent for me. After tomorrow I hope to be ready for it.”
