World No. 1 Serena Williams enjoyed a powerful start to this year's Madrid Open with a comprehensive straight sets win.

WTA: Cornet Halts Halep In Madrid Opener

Williams met fellow American Madison Brengle who reached the Stuttgart semifinals a week ago. But Brengle's recent success had no bearing against the former event two-time champion in their first-time meeting.

The top seed took control early by breaking Brengle twice in the opening set. From there, Williams fought off three break points against her while serving for the set to take it 6-0.

Brengle battled through a multiple deuce game to open the second set. When she finally held serve, it brought a smile of relief to her face. That joy was quickly diminished when Williams resumed her domination of the match.

After 56 minutes, Williams wrapped up the 6-0, 6-1 win to reach the second round.

Williams was aware of Brengle's breakthrough result this season and was ready for the challenge.

"I was able to win good today, but she's been playing really well," Williams said to WTA. "I've been following her results. She got to the semifinals of her last clay court event and she's been having some good wins.

"When I play a person I know has done well or is doing well, I have to be really focused every point."

Williams will next face fellow Fed Cup teammate Sloane Stephens on Tuesday.

"I don't think I've played her on clay yet," Williams said on her upcoming match with Stephens. "We had a really tough three set match the last time we played. She's playing really well. She's moving well and is having a better year this year. I think she's flying under the radar this year…she's really proven herself before."

In other results from Sunday's action. No. 3 seed Maria Sharapova defeated Timea Bacsinszky 6-2, 6-3. Sam Stosur ended Angelique Kerber's recent win streak by beating the German and No. 12 seed 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Barbora Strycova upset No. 6 seed Eugenie Bouchard 0-6, 6-3, 6-3.
