Anastasija Sevastova kept quiet after a tough call went against her on match point during her first-round tilt with Eugenie Bouchard on Sunday in Doha. A few minutes later the 25-year-old qualifier was quietly swept out of the draw.

Take nothing away from Bouchard’s gritty 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(4) victory today—she battled back from 5-2 down in the final set and fought hard for the victory. But an oversight by umpire Allison Hughes, and tennis’ reluctance to introduce video replay into similar calls, led to an unfortunate loss for Sevastova.

See video above to watch how Bouchard’s backhand hit comes a fraction before the out call. This means the challenge that overruled the out call should have given the point—and the match—to Sevastova.

But Hughes, likely feeling that whether or not Bouchard’s strings made contact with the ball before the call came was too close to call, ordered the point replayed. Sevastova, for reasons we do not know, did not bother to protest. Bouchard saved the ensuing match point, and another moments later, to nail down the win.

Sevastova’s coach seems upset by the call in the video, but what could he do? This type of call is made hundreds of times a season. Many times, like it was today, it is made incorrectly. Which is why every time it happens, we sound the call for video replay assistance. Sure, it would likely cost some money and take some time, but wouldn’t it be time and money well spent?
