Radwanska only won seven of 21 second-serve points but saved four of seven break points while breaking Niculescu seven times to earn her fourth victory in five meetings with the world No.61.

The 2014 Rogers Cup champion improves to 21-6 lifetime at the event.

Pavlyuchenkova knocked off American Christina McHale behind seven breaks of serve, 6-2, 7-5, to earn just her second career win in Canada in her seventh appearance.

The 16th-seeded Russian, 25, improves to 16-15 on the season and has won six of her last seven.

Seventh-seeded Roberta Vinci also advanced with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Camila Giorgi. Vinci will play the winner of either Daria Kasatkina or Sam Stosur in the third round.

Qualifier Kristina Kucova completed the upset of the day by edging 8th-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, for her first career Top 10 victory.
