Caroline Wozniacki, selected to be the Danish flagbearer at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, has not qualified for the Games and must appeal to the ITF to be included. The former No. 1, currently ranked well within the Olympic qualification cut-off at No. 34 in the world (cut-off is 56), did not qualify because she failed to make two Fed Cup appearances during this Olympic cycle.

Wozniacki had planned to compete in Denmark’s Group 2 Promotional Playoff tie against Bosnia/Herzegovina, but injured her ankle just prior to the tie.

The Dane has recently returned to the tour after a two-month layoff.

Wozniacki has appealed the ITF’s decision and the Danish Federation is backing her. The appeal will be held on June 30.

Nick McCarvel of USA Today corresponded with Danish officials on the matter last week. He reports that the Danish Federation believes the ITF will rule favorably and that Wozniacki will compete in Rio.

Morten Schram Rodtwitt, the National Olympic Committee chief, told USA TODAY Sports that the plan is to stick with Wozniacki as flag-bearer until the June 30 decision... “Denmark has chosen Caroline Wozniacki as flag bearer for the Opening Ceremony at the Rio2016 Games and we strongly believe that the ITF will oblige our application for dispensation from the eligibility criteria so she will be ready for competing in Rio,” Rodtwitt wrote in an email. “We have no ‘Plan B,’ but will of course quickly change our plans in the case that the ITF rules against Caroline on June 30th.”
