One of the lucky few to have completed a match on Day 1 at Roland Garros was France’s Benoit Paire. It wasn’t easy, with the rain coming down and with Paire’s opponent, Moldava's Radu Albot giving the Frenchman all he could handle.

But Paire would eventually survive 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, behind 65 winners and nine aces, in two hours and 59 minutes. Paire broke on all three of his break points in the fifth set to finish off a back-and-forth encounter that featured 19 breaks of serve.

The 19th-seeded Frenchman, who has never been beyond the third round at Roland Garros, will take on Teymuraz Gabashvili in the second round. Gabashvili pounded past American Donald Young, 7-6(1) 6-2 6-3, in one of the five completed matches on the men’s side on Sunday.

Other winners were Nick Kyrgios, Igor Sijsling and Andrey Kuznetsov.
