Wawrinka got off on the right foot on Tuesday by easing past Albert Ramos-Vinolas, 6-1, 6-1 to book a spot in the quarterfinals of the Banque Eric Sturdza Geneva Open, where he will next face Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta.
The Top-seeded Swiss has struggled rack up wins since reaching the final in Dubai this February. He has gone just 6-5 and lost three times to players outside of the Top-20.
On Tuesday he needed just 53 minutes to dispatch world No. 53 Ramos-Vinolas, saving the only break point he faced and winning 24 of 30 first-serve points.
Wawrinka improves to 19-7 on the season with the victory.
Defending champion Thomaz Bellucci was also a winner on Tuesday. Brazil’s No. 1 thumped Mikhail Kukushkin, 6-2, 6-1, to set up a second-round encounter with Argentina’s Federico Delbonis.
On Wednesday 3rd-seeded Marin Cilic and 4th-seeded John Isner will return to action after long layoffs. Both have been out for over a month due to knee injury, missing Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome. Cilic will face Ernests Gulbis while Isner will square off with Lukas Rosol.
2nd-seeded David Ferrer will face Denis Istomin on Wednesday.
