Seeds fell by the wayside left and right and north and south on a frantic Tuesday at the Aegon International in Eastbourne, but when all the flying grass particles and dust had settled, top-seeded Agnieskza Radwanska and 5th-seeded Petra Kvitova were still alive and into the round of 16.

With each suffering early defeats at Birmingham, gaining more matches is of paramount importance this week for the two grass stalwarts, each of whom is always a threat to make some noise at Wimbledon. Radwanska, who fell in her first match at Birmingham to CoCo Vandeweghe, advanced past Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, 6-2, 2-1 RET, to set up a clash with Eugenie Bouchard on Wednesday.

Radwanska, the 2008 champion and last year’s runner-up at Devonshire Park, advanced when the Croatian had to retire with a gastro-intestinal illness.

Kvitova, the 2011 runner-up at Eastbourne, improved to 8-3 lifetime at the event with a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6(5) win over Timea Babos. Kvitova, owner of a 40-13 lifetime record on grass, will square off with Great Britain’s Johanna Konta in the round of 16.

11th-seeded Konta was ranked well outside the Top 100 when she made a run to the quarterfinals at Eastbourne last season. Since then she has climbed inside the Top 20 and reached her first major semifinal this January in Australia.

Many seeds were not as lucky as Kvitova, Radwanska and Konta. Second-seeded Robert Vinci (Makarova), third-seeded Belinda Bencic (Vesnina), fourth-seeded Timea Bacsinszky (Mladenovic), sixth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova (Bondarenko) and seventh-seeded Sam Stosur (Wozniacki) all fell on Tuesday. And that’s not even the half of it.

Eighth-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro (Doi), 13th-seeded Sara Errani (Petkovic), 14th-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (Brengle), 15th-seeded Irina-Camelia Begu (Bouchard) and 16th-seeded Lucie Safarova (Friedsam) also were sent tumbling from the draw.
