Dominic Thiem put forth a stunning performance in his first week on clay since last July, winning the Rio Open title with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Pablo Carreno Busta in the final.

Thiem wins his fifth clay title and eighth overall, as well as his second ATP-500 level title.

He found himself in a battle early on as the players traded breaks in the opening set before Thiem broke decisively in the 12th game, converting his third set point by forcing a backhand error from Carreno Busta.

Thiem looked to be off to the races in the second set but the Spaniard battled back from a break down to level. Carreno Busta tucked a neat drop shot just over the net with Thiem facing a break point at 4-2, that changed the complexion of the match.

But only temporarily, as Thiem was just too much to handle on this day.

Thiem broke on his first championship point with Carreno Busta serving at 4-5, as the Spaniard’s last-ditch forehand fell long.

Thiem improves to 12-5 on the season with the win and 8-3 in ATP finals. The Austrian has won five titles from seven finals since the beginning of 2016.

Carreno Busta drops to 0-4 against Thiem lifetime (at ATP-level), and 10-5 on the season.
