Khachanov hit 7 aces and saved four of six break points to defeat Bedene for the third time in three tries. Khachanov has now won 21 matches in 2017, already eight more than he won all of last season. The No.3 seed advances to Federico Delbonis on Friday.

Delbonis defeated No.8-seeded David Ferrer, 7-5, 6-3, to win for the first time in four tries against last week’s Bastad champion. Delbonis, a former runner-up at Hamburg, improves to 8-3 lifetime at the German Open. He snapped Ferrer’s season-best six-match winning streak.

It was a difficult day for a few other seeds in Hamburg. No.4-seeded Gilles Simon fell to Philipp Kohlchreiber, while No.5-seeded Benoit Paire was eliminated by Nicolas Kicker.

Lucky Loser Leonardo Mayer and Jiri Vesely also qualified for the quarterfinals with wins on the red clay on Thursday.
