Petra Kvitova came to New York with no expectations. She just might leave with her third Grand Slam title.

The 27-year-old put forth a breathtaking display of power tennis, rebounding from an early deficit to storm past No.3-seeded Garbiñe Muguruza, 7-6(3), 6-3, to reach her 10th career Grand Slam quarterfinal and second in New York.

Kvitova, who missed the first five months of the season while recovering from a hand injury that she suffered when struggling with a knife-wielding burglar in her apartment in the Czech Republic this winter, is only playing in her eighth event since returning to the WTA in May. She does not have full felling in her left hand, which was damaged badly and required surgery to be saved, but she was able to produce one of her most dominant matches of the season against Muguruza.

She took the forehand down the line with authority and had Muguruza on her back foot for the better part of both sets. She finished with 24 winners to just seven for Muguruza, and won 35 of 45 first-serve points while saving nine of 12 break points.

She’ll face Venus Williams in the quarterfinals. The pair have not met since their epic battle at Wimbledon in 2014. Kvitova won that battle, 5-7 7-6(2) 7-5, and she has won three in a row and four of five against Williams.

“She is a champion and she is playing just amazing this year,” said Kvitova of Williams.

The same can be said of the Czech, who has proven to be a picture of inspiration in New York as she continues on her journey away from a traumatic experience and back to the game of tennis with renewed enthusiasm and appreciation.
