Portugul’s Joao Sousa if finally making a run on home soil.

The 29-year-old saved two match points in the second set and notched an emotional 4-6, 7-6(1), 7-5 win over compatriot Pedro Sousa to book his spot in the quarterfinals at the Millennium Estoril Open for the first time.

Sousa, who upset Daniil Medvedev in round one, needed two hours and 25 minutes to clinch the win.

Pedro served for the match twice but Joao had the magic working in his favor on this day. He was down a set and 5-2 but managed to find his way back into the set with dramatic shotmaking.

Eventually Pedro took a break lead in set three but once again failed to hold onto the lead while serving from 30-15, 5-4 in the decider. Joao took the final four games to clinch the victory and deny Pedro his first ATP quarterfinal appearance.

Sousa has now won 12 of his last 16 matches after starting the season 3-6. He’ll face Kyle Edmund on Friday for a spot in the last four.

Edmund took care of Australia’s Alex De Minaur, 6-2, 7-5, to book his second clay-court quarterfinal of the spring. Edmund reached the final at Marrakech before falling to Pablo Andujar.
