May day at the Millennium Estoril Open prompted a Portuguese celebration.

Portuguese No. 1 João Sousa topped eighth-seeded Daniil Medvedev, 7-6 (1), 7-5, for his first ever Estoril win that set up a Sousa vs. Sousa second-rounder in Estoril.

The 50th-ranked Russian was one of four seeds bounced from the field today.

João Sousa converted four of eight break points in a one hour, 45-minute triumph.




The 68th-ranked João Sousa, who lives and trains in Barcelona, will face compatriot Pedro Sousa for a place in the quarterfinals. It will be the first pro meeting between the 29-year-old Sousas.

Wild card Pedro Sousa edged French veteran Gilles Simon, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (4) yesterday.



In an all-lefty encounter, Argentine Davis Cup hero Federico Delbonis defeated fifth-seeded Spaniard Alberto Ramos-Vinolas, 6-2, 6-4,

Delbonis won 17 of 26 points played on Ramos-Vinolas' serve and broke six times in an 85-minute victory—his second over the Spaniard. Delbonis will face Italian Simone Bolelli next.

Nicolas Jarry knocked off seventh-seeded Leonardo Mayer, 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4.

In a meeting of qualifiers, Bolelli beat Portugal's Joao Domingues , 6-3, 6-2.

British left-hander Cameron Norrie surprised sixth-seeded Robin Haase , 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, carving out 14 break-point chances in a one hour, 56-minute victory.

The 22-year-old Londoner earned his first Tour-level, main-draw victory of the season.

Norrie advanced to a second-round meeting with Spain's Roberto Carballes Baena, a 7-6 (1), 6-3, victor over American Bjorn Fratangelo




Fresh off his run to the Barcelona final on Sunday, 19-year-old Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas was back to his winning ways. Tsitsipas stopped Pablo Andujar,  7-6 (2), 6-3. 

Ranked a career-high No. 44 following his Barcelona burst, Tsitsipas will take on top-seeded South African Kevin Anderson for a place in the lasat eight.
