A 90-minute rain delay interrupted play in Montreal tonight.

When the rain subsided, Kyle Edmund brought the thunder to knock Nick Kyrgios out of Montreal, 6-3, 6-4.

Edmund blasted four aces in the final game, including his 15th ace on match point to punctuate his first win over the Washington, D.C. champion.

Last weekend, Kyrgios conquered Top 10 opponents Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev in succession to capture his second title of the season at the Citi Open.

A cranky Kyrgios didn't look comfortable in his Montreal return tonight and Edmund took full advantage, breaking at 15 for a 4-2 lead then running out the opening set.

The 33rd-ranked Briton built a one-set, 4-all lead when the rain came.

When play resumed, Kyrgios dropped serve at love to donate the decisive break and a 5-4 lead.

Serving for his first Coupe Rogers win, Edmund dug out of a love-30 hole smacking a slew of aces to close a 67-minute conquest. Edmund's reward for toppling the Washington, D.C. champion is a second-round clash vs. Washington finalist Medvedev.

In an all-Canadian clash, Felix Auger-Aliassime edged doubles partner Vasek Pospisil, 6-2, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (3), a day after the pair shared the court as doubles partners.

It was the 18-year-old Auger-Aliassime's third win over Pospisil in as many meetings, including his four-set victory at Wimbledon last month.

The victory vaults Auger-Aliassime into another all-Canadian encounter against 17th-seeded Milos Raonic, who was the 2013 Montreal runner-up to Rafael Nadal.

John Isner zapped his 26th ace on match point capping a dramatic 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(6) decision over Australian Jordan Thompson in two hours, 19 minutes.

Newport champion Isner will play Chilean Cristian Garin next.

Former US Open champion Marin Cilic dispatched American Bradley Klahn, 6-3, 7-6(7) and will face Australian lucky loser John Millman in round two.
