Australia’s Ash Barty proved to be too steady and too strong for up and coming Dayana Yastremska on Saturday night in Adelaide. The World No.1 claimed her eighth career title and her first on home soil, 6-2 7-5, to become the first Aussie woman to win a trophy on home soil in eight years.

“I felt like it was a great tussle,” said Barty. “It’s a final and you have to bring your absolute best, and I was able to do that today and just get across the line.”

Barty ran away with the opening set by converting her third break point of the seventh game to lead 5-2 and then consolidating to grab the first set with just two points dropped on serve.

She looked to be headed for an easy victory when she took a 2-0 lead in the second set but Yastremska showed impressive resilience in leveling up at 2-all and staying locked with the top-ranked Aussie all the way to 5-5.

Yastremska held a pair of break points to lead 5-3 but could not convert and Barty reeled off the final 10 points of the contest to close affairs in a relatively tidy one hour and 25 minutes.
