While some unexpected American names find themselves in the last eight of the Citi Open in Washington D.C., the top seed made an early exit.

Canada's Vasek Pospisil beat No. 1 seed Tomas Berdych under the lights on Thursday night. Pospisil broke Berdych's serve four times in wrapping up the 6-2, 6-4 win. This is Pospisil's second career win over Berdych including last year in Montreal.

Pospisil's fellow Davis Cup teammate Milos Raonic again needed two tiebreaks to advance. Raonic defeated Australian Lleyton Hewitt 7-6(1), 7-6(3).

American Steve Johnson continued his unlikely run. After knocking out last year's finalist John Isner, he then faced another big server in Ivo Karlovic. Johnson saved two match points in the three set struggle yet came away the winner 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(7).

Another American Donald Young also finds himself in the quaterfinals after he beat No. 15 seed Denis Istomin 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
