Rafael Nadal has pulled out of Toronto and Cincinnati due to an injury to his right wrist, putting his US Open title defense in jeopardy.

Rafael Nadal announced on Wednesday that he’ll miss U.S. Open Series events in Toronto and Cincinnati due to an injury to his right wrist.

"Unfortunately I injured my right wrist yesterday during practice and after the tests I have undergone today in Spain, including an MRI, and checking with my doctors, I will have to stay out of competition for at least 2-3 weeks," Nadal said in a statement on the Western and Southern Open's website. "I am sorry and wish the best to the tournament and thank all of the fans for their support. I'm extremely disappointed that I am unable to defend my titles and compete in Toronto and Cincinnati this year. I was looking forward to coming and playing again after my great results last year."

According to Ben Rothenberg's piece in the New York Times, Nadal's injury is a "small disinsertion of the posterior ulnar pod of his right wrist."




Nadal had been training at home in Mallorca, but was seen yesterday at the Barcelona Airport:
