Top-seeded David Ferrer and seventh-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber are the only two seeds left standing at the Bet-at-Home Open in Hamburg this week.
10 Things: Find out More about Breakout Star Alexander Zverev
Both reached the quarterfinals on Thursday, as Ferrer outlasted Andreas Seppi of Italy, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, and Kohlschreiber took down France’s Gilles Simon, 7-5, 6-3.
But much of the attention at the clay-court event was on a pair of unheralded Germans, as 17-year-old Alexander Zverev and Tobias Kamke set up an unlikely all-German battle for a spot in the semifinals.
Zverev, who won his first main draw victory on the ATP level earlier in the week, eased past 11th-seeded Santiago Giraldo, 6-4, 7-6(6), becoming the youngest player to reach an ATP quarterfinal since 2003 in the process.
Kamke reached his first tour-level quarterfinal in ten months by ousting fourth-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov, 7-5, 2-6, 7-5.
Other winners on Thursday included Lukas Rosol, who knocked off third-seeded Tommy Robredo, 7-5, 7-6(6), Pablo Andujar, who trounced Dustin Brown, 6-1, 6-2, Leonardo Mayer, who disposed of up-and-coming Dominic Thiem, 6-3, 6-2, and Dusan Lajovic, who advanced when his compatriot Filip Krajinovic had to retire with an injury.
