Top seeds at the BMW Open by FWU AG posted mixed results in Saturday's semifinals on a cold day in Munich, Germany.
Defending champion Tommy Haas struggled in his semifinal against not only the cold conditions but a red hot opponent in Slovakian qualifier Martin Klizan.
Klizan, who once reached a career high ranking of No. 26 a few years ago, took control early and never let up. Klizan soon surged to a 6-3, 6-2 win in just 64 minutes.
Waiting for Klizan in Sunday's final will be a familiar foe in Italy's Fabio Fognini.
Fognini, making his tournament debut in Munich, faced off against another qualifier in his semifinal. Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff, in his second ATP semifinal of the season, had the crowd's support. But that didn't help him against the more experienced Italian.
Fognini raced away with a 6-3, 6-1 win in just over an hour to reach his third final of the year.
Sunday's final will match Fognini versus Klizan with the Italian leading the overall head to head 3-1. Klizan won their first ever meeting in the St. Petersburg final back in 2012.
