(April 7, 2010) Martina Navratilova has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

The 53-year-old Hall of Famer told People Magazine she underwent a biopsy in February that detected cancer cluster in her left breast. The disease was detected early and the prognosis is "excellent" according to the People Magazine report.

"I cried," Navratilova told People. "It knocked me on my ass, really. I feel so in control of my life and my body, and then this comes, and it's completely out of my hands."

Navratilova, was diagnosed with a "non-invasive form of breast cancer called ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS," according to the People Magazine report.
Navratilova had a lumpectomy and is scheduled to start six weeks of radiation therapy in May.

The cancer has not spread to the breast tissue, Dr. Mindy Nagle, Navratilova's friend and physician told People.

"It was the best-case scenario you could imagine for detecting breast cancer," Dr. Nagle told People Magazine.

Navratilova said she had not been undergoing annual mammograms and feels fortunate for the early detection.

"I went four years between mammograms," Navratilova told People. "I let it slide. Everyone gets busy, but don't make excuses. I stay in shape and eat right, and it happened to me. Another year and I could have been in big trouble."
