Prize money for the 2014 French Open will increase to a total $34.5 million or just over 25 million euros as part of the event's four year plan.

According to the French Tennis Federation (FFT), this year's raise will be an over $4 million boost from 2013. The men's and women's champions will earn 1.65 million euros or over $2.2 million dollars, a 10% increase from last year.

Those who lose in the second, third and fourth rounds will see the biggest surge in their earnings - a 20%-$25% rise from 2013.

"This significant raise in the prize money at Roland Garros is part of the four-year plan which we established for 2013–2016," Gilbert Ysern, tournament director and Director General of the FFT said. "It is specifically designed to benefit players who are knocked out in the first week."

Prize money increases continue at each of the four majors after players successfully negotiated them several years ago.

The second Grand Slam of the year begins on May 25th. Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams enter as defending champions.
