A rematch of last year’s Skistar Swedish Open appeared to be written in the stars, with Fernando Verdasco and Carlos Berlocq both set to play the semifinals on Saturday in the Swedish seaside resort town.

But Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay and Joao Sousa of Portugal had other ideas.

Cuevas, 28, reached his first career ATP final with a 7-6(6), 6-3 victory over Verdasco in Saturday’s first semifinal. The world No. 111 will attempt to become the second player outside the top 100 to claim a title in 2014, joining Martin Klizan.

With his win on Saturday, Cuevas becomes the third Uruguayan in ATP history to reach a tour-level final, joining Diego Perez and five-time titlist Marcelo Filippini.

In the second semifinal, Sousa ousted defending champion Carlos Berlocq, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, to reach his second tour-level final. Sousa, 25, became the first player from Portugal to win an ATP title in 2013, when he defeated Julien Benneteau in the Kuala Lumpur final.

Sousa owns a 1-0 career edge over Cuevas, having defeated him in the round of 16 at Kuala Lumpur in 2013.
