(September 8, 2011) World No. 92 Angelique Kerber had never made it past the second round at the US Open and now finds herself against the nineth seed, Samantha Stosur, on Saturday.

Not even she believed she could go this far.

“I come here and my goal was to get into the second or third round. Now I'm in the semifinal, and, yeah, it's unbelievable feeling,” she told the media.

The young German upset Flavia Pennetta 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in two hours, 14 minutes without a single winner and with 109 points in all, a few steps ahead of the Italian. She is now 25-22 wins to losses in the past 12 months.

She will now play the Australian for the first time in her first semifinal after Stosur defeated the 2010-finalist Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 6-3.

Kerber commented on the unknown ahead, “I mean, I will play with her, against her the first time. I will just enjoy the match. I go out there and I will enjoy it. I will play my tennis. I try to fight also, play point by point, and I will see.”

Stosur said of Kerber, “Well, I don't actually know much about Kerber except that she's a lefty. That's about it. We've never played and never practiced together or anything like that. Might be interesting to watch a little bit of that match.”

This is Stosur’s first semifinal at Flushing Meadows after a 67-minute match and 25 winners. She is playing some of her best tennis since making it to the finals of Roland Garros.

“Yeah, maybe so. I think this year up until the last probably month haven't been as good as what I wanted it to be. But, yeah, it's nice. Leading into this event I was able to get some good results and start feeling good again. To carry it through now into the main event is definitely a nice feeling. Yeah, I think I'm playing well, but you always hope there is still that little bit extra there,” the World No. 10 confirmed,

The two have surpassed expectations and meet Saturday for the chance to enter the US Open final.
