Where Are They Now? We're Wondering About Soderling

(July 16, 2012) -- When
Robin Soderling
got on Twitter Monday to congratulate
David Ferrer
for winning his fifth title of the year at the SkiStar Open in Bastad, it helped bring to light the stark fact that the two-time French Open finalist, because of his inability to play for 12 months now due to his ongoing issues with mononucleosis, has no singles ranking at all according to the ATP Tour computer.
After winning Bastad last year, Soderling began to first deal with the onset of the viral infection that forced him out of the U.S. Open and then subsequent tour events. In May of this year, Soderling announced he would miss the Olympics but hoped he could return for the rest of the summer.
"I haven't given up on the year. Hopefully I can come back a little, at an OK level," Soderling said during
his press conference
.
The big-hitting Swede, who climbed to as high as No. 4 in the world along with winning ten titles, has been keeping busy traveling around the world as documented by his constant sharing of pictures taken of his trips on Twitter along with learning recently that his fiancé
Jenni Mostrom
was expecting their first child in September.
Though Soderling is trying his best to return to the tour it's a gradual process for him. Speaking to ATP.com in May
just before the French Open
, Soderling again stressed that patience was a must for him.
"I made a mistake a couple times coming back too soon in the fall and had some setbacks. I’m a little bit scared of doing too much and training too hard. I’m trying to gradually step it up and do more and more, but it’s still pretty far from 100 per cent."
The soon-to-be 28-year-old Soderling may have had rubbed some fans the wrong way early in his career due his
strong on-court personality
, but after being away from the game for a year now, many hope that Sweden's best player in over a decade will have a welcomed comeback on the courts soon enough.
