Video: Serena Shows Why Miami is Her House
In case you were wondering whether or not last night’s tense struggle between
Serena Williams
and
Simona Halep
was really as good as many people are saying, maybe this stunning point and the accompanying emotional outbursts from Serena and fans will remind you?

Serena Battles Past Halep in Miami Epic
Check out this incredible point, which ends with a majestic lob by Williams and an impassioned celebration by the American. But the point would not have been as entertaining if it hadn’t been for the incredible forehand counter-punch by Halep two shots earlier. From well behind the baseline and on the run, she nearly overpowered the seven-time Miami champion. That’s something you don’t see often. And seriously, tennis fans don’t get to see Serena Williams pushed by another player very often either. We see Williams fight herself, yes, but on this wild evening in Miami, Halep did much of the pushing.
Marion Bartoli, while commentating for Tennis TV said she thought Williams’ 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 win over Halep was the best WTA match she’d seen in the last 12 to 18 months. Well, there were some good ones in that span, but given the fact that Williams and Halep were both on double-digit win streaks and how high the intensity was in this match, there certainly is a case to be made.
Some will point out that Williams hit over 40 errors in the match and that her level dipped in the second and third sets, but we feel that Halep’s fire and doggedness caused Williams’ difficulties. Anyhow, like the GOAT argument on the men’s side, it’s hard to really say if one match is better than another. Was Williams-Halep in Miami better than, say, Halep-Sharapova at Roland Garros, or Venus Williams-Kvitova at Wimbledon?
All we can do is rejoice in the goodness of all these matches, and let the debate begin.
