Williams Sisters to Lead Americans against Italy in Fed Cup

Venus and Serena Williams will both travel to next weekend’s Fed Cup tie in Brindisi, Italy with the hopes of ending America’s four-tie losing streak to the Italians.

The sisters will be joined by Alison Riske and Christina McHale, while the Italians will field a lineup of Sara Errani, Flavia Pennetta, Camila Giorgi and Karin Knapp.

“I am thrilled to have Serena and Venus playing with us again” said U.S. Captain Mary Joe Fernandez. “This team also has depth with Christina, who has a lot of Fed Cup experience, and with Alison, who has had a great 12 months and is playing in her second Fed Cup. Italy has been a challenge since they have been such a strong team over the years, but we look forward to trying to get a win to get back into the World Group next year.”

The tie will be played outdoors on red clay. The Williams sisters own a combined record of 35-4 in Fed Cup play, which includes Serena Williams’ perfect 14-0.

The winner of the tie will return to the Fed Cup World Group in 2016.

Despite losing the last four ties with Italy, the Americans still hold a 9-4 head-to-head advantage.

The Fed Cup World Group semifinals will also be contested next weekend, with a Maria Sharapova-led Russian team taking on Germany in Sochi, Russia, and a Petra Kvitova-led Czech team taking on France in Ostrava, Czech Republic. Kvitova, who skipped Indian Wells and Miami due to exhaustion, announced today that she's fit enough to compete.
