Roland Garros prize money payouts will increase by 14 percent this year, with the men's and women's champions winning 2 million euros ($2.25 million) each, the tournament said. That number represents an increase of 200,000 euros ($225,000).

The total French Open prize money of about 32 million euros ($36 million) is an increase of 4 million euros ($4.5 million) from last year.

Players who lose in rounds two through four will see the biggest pay increase. The biggest increase of 20 percent is for players who lose in the second, third and fourth rounds.

"This noticeable increase in prize money at Roland Garros is the final raise mentioned in the four-year plan drawn up for 2013 to 2016," tournament director Guy Forget said in a statement. "In total, the tournament’s prize money will have increased by an historic 70 percent during this four-year period, with a particular focus on those players who are eliminated in the first week, who have seen their earnings double."
