Pliskova Set for Rankings Milestone Next Week

After a breakout season in 2015, 23-year-old Karolina Pliskova will crack the Top-10 on Monday, the WTA announced. The Louny, Czech Republic native has been solid all year, going 36-14 with four finals and three Top 10 wins.

Pliskova will be the 8th player from the Czech Republic to crack the Top 10. Here are the other seven:

Martina Navratilova
Hana Mandlikova
Helena Sukova
Jana Novotna
Nicole Vaidisova
Petra Kvitova
Lucie Safarova

Earlier this week, before Pliskova’s ranking milestone became known, the Czech didn’t seem overly concerned about it. During a press conference with media at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, she chatted with reporters about her season.

“It’s not really a goal for me to be Top 10,” she said. “I don’t really feel any difference if you are 10 or 11. The results that I’m waiting for are the Grand Slams, so we’ll see how the U.S. Open goes and the rest of the season. There is also Singapore.”

When asked if she’d rather finish the year in the Top 10 or make the second week of a major, the 23-year-old chose the latter. “I would probably choose to be in the second week of a Slam,” she said. “Because I’ve never been there, and obviously if I’m in the second week of U.S. Open then I will probably be Top 10.”

Pliskova has yet to reach the round of 16 in thirteen major appearances, and she admitted she’s disappointed by that fact. “I have to say I was really disappointed with my week at Wimbledon because I was expecting a little bit more,” she said. “But the draw was quite tough. CoCo [Vandeweghe] was playing great tennis there, and she proved it even later in the tournament, so it was a tough draw for me.”

Vandeweghe, who defeated Pliskova in the second round at Wimbledon, went on to reach the quarterfinals. At the French Open this year Pliskova fell to Romania’s Andreea Mitu in the second round. Mitu went on to make the second week.

“Of course I was expecting much better results than I did—even in Paris—but it wasn’t going my way,” Pliskova said. “I hope there will be more chances.”

“It’s a little bit bigger pressure for me,” she added, of her current Slam mentality. “It’s also new for me. Maybe I came to the Grand Slams a little more tired, so I will try now to not play the tournament before the U.S. Open, to do a little bit more different preparation. I’m just getting used to [playing majors] and I hope next year will be better.”
