McDonald has played the US Open main-draw twice falling to Casper Ruud in five sets after building a two-set lead and squandering a two-set lead vs. Robin Haase in the 2018 US Open first round.

Coric saved six match points toppling fourth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas, 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(4) en route to the  2020 US Open quarterfinals. In his last Grand Slam appearance, Coric lost to McDonald in the Australian Open second round.
