Monfils, buoyed by the support of the late-night Melbourne crowd and his own desire to keep the party rolling, overcame a sluggish start to race past 20-year-old Frenchman Lucas Pouille, 6-7(3) 3-6 6-4 6-1 6-4.

The scoreline tells a story, to be sure, but these two amazing points from Monfils better illustrate the wicked and wild wave that the Frenchman rode to victory. His ad-lib ‘tweener (see video above) which led to a running backhand winner, provided a spark early in the third set.
