Second Serve

Staring down a deep third-set deficit, Benoit Paire pulled off a hat trick at Hopman Cup.

Seeking to change his fortunes — or at least his look — in the face of a 5-1 deficit against Australian Marinko Matosevic, Paire pulled a ball kid's lime lid off his head, wore it while strolling behind the baseline then placed the cap on a linesman.

While the stoic official did not crack a smile, Matosevic applauded and the crowd roared in approval.

The rally cap gesture did not spark a comeback as Matosevic closed out the match, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. But Paire and partner Alize Cornet won the decisive mixed doubles over Matosevic and Casey Dellacqua, 7-6 (3), 7-5, capping a successful day to lift France to a 2-1 victory in the mixed-team competition.
