IMG Tennis Sacks Bernard Tomic

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, news emerged Tuesday that 21-year-old Bernard Tomic has been cut loose from his management agreement with IMG Tennis prior to the conclusion of his current agreement with the firm.

Tomic, who first signed with IMG when he was a 12-year-old tennis prodigy, has undergone a tumultuous period after reaching Wimbledon’s quarterfinals in 2011. At the time he was the youngest player in 25 years to reach the last eight at the All England Club, but since then his behavior and fitness have spiraled downward.

Tomic’s notoriously angst-ridden father was banned from the ATP last year after a head-butting incident with Tomic’s hitting partner, while Tomic himself has gained the reputation as a tank machine and an off-court trouble maker.

According to the report, IMG’s decision was based more on Tomic’s off-court shenanigans, which involve multiple run-ins with the law and public drinking that has led to ill-timed and tasteless photos, than his current world ranking of 124.

IMG, which currently has World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, Li Na and Maria Sharapova in its stable, is reportedly hungry to do a deal with rising Canadian Eugenie Bouchard.

As for Tomic, he’s a comeback story in the making with talent that far surpasses his current ranking. But his track record, difficult father and unwillingness to show remorse for some of his worst infractions should make him a difficult sell for any talent agency.
