Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

At an age when many of his contemporaries have joined the commentary or coaching box, Roger Federer refuses to act his age.

The man who will celebrate his 34th birthday in less than a month, produced one of the peak performances of his life today. Federer played dynamic tennis defeating 2013 champion Andy Murray, 7-5, 7-5, 6-4 to roar into his 10th Wimbledon final.

When you've racked up an eye-popping 1,036 career victories as Federer has, there's a career-long highlight reel to choose from, but the Swiss said today's command performance ranks among his very best ever.

"Definitely one of the best matches I've played in my career," Federer says in his post-match press conference video above. "The first set, I don't remember point-by-point, but it was definitely really, really solid."

A former rival, Robin Soderling, apparently agrees firing off this tweet during the match.

The Swiss set the tone with an imposing serve. Federer served 76 percent, rapped 20 aces, denied the lone break point he faced in his first service game and did not drop serve against Murray. He called it one of the best serving days of his career.

"I served very, very well. I served at a high first-serve percentage, plus going big, you know," Federer said. "So definitely it was one of my best serving days of my career for sure."
