World number one Novak Djokovic has made a donation of 40,000 euros to the Serbian town of Novi Pazar, which has been badly affected by the coronavirus.
Djokovic, who announced that he had tested positive for Covid-19 last week, has recently tested negative.
According to the website of the sports channel Sportklub TV, the Serb made the donation to Novi Pazar, located in the southwest of the country, because the city of 60,000 residents has been particularly affected by the coronavirus and even declared a state of emergency at the end of June.
Djokovic has been under fire recently for his role in putting on the Adria Tour, which came to Belgrade, Serbia and Zadar, Croatia before being shut down due to a spate of Covid-19 positive tests.
Serbia was believed to be in a good state with regard to Covid-19 at the time, and the government cleared the events to be played with minimal social distancing protocols in place.
But things backfired and several top players, and many others, ended up testing positive.
Cases in Serbia have started to climb recently and hit a two-month high on July 2nd, topping out at 359. The country remains relatively spared—Serbia has only seen 298 Covid-19 related deaths.
