Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

By Chris Oddo | @TheFanChild | Thursday, July 7, 2022

Rafael Nadal has a 7mm tear in his abdomen, according to reports filed by Marca on Thursday morning.

The Spaniard, who is slated to face Nick Kyrgios in the Wimbledon semifinal on Friday, went through a brief practice on Court No.5 on Thursday, barely hitting his serve.

For comparison sake, Novak Djokovic had a 17mm tear in his abdomen during his run to the Australian Open title in 2021. After the tournament he reported that the tear had grown to 25mm.

Of course the tear could be in a completely different part of the abdomen and therefore cause less or more acute pain. All we can do is speculate on the amount of pain Nadal is experiencing and what type of limitation it could potentially cause him when it comes to specific shots, like the serve.

Nadal talked about the injury after his quarterfinal victory over Taylor Fritz on Wednesday, saying that he was experiencing elevated pain.

"It's obvious that today is nothing new. I had these feelings for a couple of days," he said. "Without a doubt, today was the worst day. Have been an important increase of pain and limitation. And that's it, yeah. I managed to win that match. Let's see what's going on tomorrow."
