Fresh off his first grass title in Stuttgart, Dominic Thiem is looking like he’s ready for another deep run in Halle. The 22-year-old Austrian notched his tour-leading 46th win of the season, taking down Portugal’s Joao Sousa, 7-5, 6-4.

Thiem saved the only break point he faced to improve to 6-1 lifetime against Sousa and 3-0 this year.

He also put on an incredible shotmaking display at times (see video above).

Thiem begain the season with a 2-6 record on grass, but has won all five of his matches on the surface this season.

The Austrian will face Teymuraz Gabashvili in the second round. The Russian eased past Italy’s Paolo Lorenze, 6-1, 6-4.

Other winners on Wednesday in Halle were Alexander Zverev (d. Becker, 7-5, 3-0 RET), Andreas Seppi (d. Sugita) and Marcos Baghdatis (d. Dustin Brown, 7-6, 7-6(8)).
