Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

By Nick Georgandis

Tennis doesn't get much purer than Charlie Pasarell, who was announced as a member of the 2013 International Tennis Hall of Fame class Monday morning.
Pasarell, the man behind Indian Wells, which kicks off this week, has been an NCAA tennis champion, a vice president of the Americas tournaments for the ATP and was a pretty darn good pro, peaking at No. 11 in the world in 1966 and reaching the quarterfinals of the US Open as a 21-year-old in 1965 and at Wimbledon as a 32-year-old in 1976.
Now 69, the native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, remains the tournament director of the BNP Paribas event at Indian Wells, and under his leadership, the event went from being just another West Coast tournament to what some call "The Fifth Major."
Pasarell is a member of so many Halls of Fame already, he might need to start writing them all down just to remember them - he's also a member of the Intercollegiate Men's Tennis Hall of Fame, the Southern California Tennis Association Hall of Fame and the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame, which he joined in 2012.
