Second Serve

Gael Monfils may have stolen the show temporarily with his diving attempt to return one of Milos Raonic’s volleys on Thursday night at the BNP Paribas Open, but it was the Canadian who went home with the 7-5, 6-3 victory to book his place in the semifinals here at Indian Wells for the second consecutive year.

Raonic levels his lifetime head-to-head with Monfils at 2-2, and improves his 2016 record to 13-1.

“I created opportunities for myself,” said Raonic, who hit seven aces, won 31 of 40 first-serve points and saved one of two break points. “I served well and when I did get myself in trouble, I felt like it was me forcing the game those kind of things are positive and I stuck to it and it came together.”

Raonic will play David Goffin for a spot in the final on Saturday.
