Second Serve

Sabine Lisicki made her share of unforced errors during her 6-4, 6-7(3), 7-6(4) victory over defending champion Flavia Pennetta on Thursday night at the BNP Paribas Open, but she made no mistake on this rollicking web gem!

Has Lisicki ever played a more athletic point than this? Not sure if we’ve ever seen one of this caliber from her.

To top it off, Lisicki saved three match points later in the set while serving at 4-5, and rallied past Pennetta in the tiebreaker to advance to the semis.

“I just stepped up to the line and believed in my serve,” she said afterwards.

For Lisicki, who started the year with a dismal 1-6 record, the win gives her a chance to break the .500 mark when she meets Jelena Jankovic for a spot in the final on Friday. Remarkably, Lisicki had never won a match at Indian Wells until this season. She had lost her first five main draw matches at Indian Wells, dating back to 2008.

“I think in the past I had problems adjusting to the conditions here,” she said. “They are very different also during the day, depending on the time of the day. The ball flies during the day way more than in the afternoon, and in the evening it’s completely different again when it’s dark. So I think I wasn’t able to adjust well back then. I think now I also believe more in my game. Not that I can only play well at Wimbledon, but do the things at different tournaments, too.”
