Second Serve

By Nick Georgandis

On Sunday, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams took the Madrid Masters Open singles titles, Williams' 50th WTA crown and Nadal's 55th on the ATP circuit. Only Roger Federer (76) has more titles than either player.

Both Nadal and Williams have had careers beset by injuries, but both have defied them time and again to return to the top of their games and continue to put up eye-popping career and single-season statistics.

With 55 career titles, Nadal ranks 10th in Open Era history in that category. He's within two of Ilie Nastase for ninth place, five of Andre Agassi for eighth, seven of Guillermo Vilas for seventh and nine away from tying Bjorn Borg and Pete Sampras for fifth on the all-time charts.

With 50 career titles, Williams is now three back of Monicas Seles for fifth in career titles in the Open Era and five behind Lindsay Davenport for fourth. Fourth will have to be Williams' bar to set for her career - the three women above: Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert and Steffi Graf all have more than 100 titles each.

Here's a look at the milestone titles for Nadal and Williams over the course of their careers.
