Wozniacki struggled with the injury to her left knee during her second-round loss to Roberta Vinci in Madrid.

Former world No.1 Wozniacki was due to play Italy’s Francesca Schiavone in the first round at Foro Italico.

“I am very disappointed not to be able to play in Rome this year as it is one of my favorite events of the year,” Wozniacki said in a statement to the tournament. “But I need think what’s best for my health moving forward for the remainder of the season.”

Eugenie Bouchard, the 17th seed, has been moved to play Schiavone with a qualifier or lucky loser to be drawn to face Japan’s Kurumi Nara.
