Novak Djokovic returns to action in Rome where he takes on Nicolas Almagro tomorrow.

The world No. 1 wasted no time getting his feet dirty on Rome's red clay.

Djokovic practiced with Stan Wawrinka, whom he beat in the 2008 Rome final, over the weekend in preparation for his first tournament since winning Monte-Carlo last month.

The top seed said he hopes skipping Madrid last week will give him added endurance to go the distance in Rome and Paris.

"Obviously, it was not an easy decision for me to skip [Madrid] becuse I wanted to play it. I thought it was a better decision for me to skip it because I played a lot of matches, I didn't have a lot of time off," Djokovic told the media in Rome. "At this level you need that freshness of mind and fresh legs to perform well and to be able to consistently overcome the challenges of the long matches on this surface."

Riding a 17-match winning streak into Rome, the reigning champion hopes the rest will help him win his fourth Rome title and first Roland Garros championship.

"Hopefully it will positively affect this week and Roland Garros. We''l see," Djokovic said. "I've done things in the right way the last couple of weeks. My entire team is here, both coaches, we hope to have a good result."
