Ahead of his 16th appearance at the ATP World Tour Finals, Roger Federer is all about good vibes.

The 37-year-old Swiss, a six-time champion at the event, says he doesn’t want to think too much about the fact that he’s closing in on his 100th career title—he just wants to play the best he can.

“Now that I’m so close to 100 titles of course every time I will enter a tournament I will feel like this might be it, this is the chance, but then again I don’t want it to let that create negative vibes in a way that I want it too badly and lose sight of what’s in front of me,” said Federer. “Here at the World Tour Finals you can’t do that anyhow because of the toughness of the opponent.”

Federer, who claimed his 20th major title in 2018 at the Australian Open and also became the oldest No.1 in the history of the ATP, says he feels he’s playing his best tennis again after claiming the title at Basel and reaching the semis at Paris where he impressively pushed Novak Djokovic to a third-set tiebreaker.

“I feel like Basel and Paris, those couple of weeks, gave me a big lift in terms of knowing that if I’m maybe not playing my best I can find a way, and also the body was ready to endure a lot of matches in a short period of time which is always important for me to know that I can do.”

Federer owns a 55-13 lifetime record at the Nitto ATP Finals but has not won the title since winning back-to-back trophies in 2010 and 2011.

“I’m just excited to be qualified again and that I am at 99 titles is a great thing. 100 would mean the world to me and I’ll try to give it a go this week again.”
